We don't take anyone's word for it, including our own. Before a story goes up, we re-open the source and copy every dollar figure exactly as it's written there. Then each story gets one of two labels:
A journalist at the outlet says they checked documents, like pay slips, payout records, or analytics dashboards.
The numbers come from the person themselves, in an interview, an as-told-to essay, or their own post. They might be true. Nobody checked the paperwork.
